British Top 5 Companies to Watch
Britain’s Top 5 Companies to Watch will be recognized at the British Small Business Awards event on May 29th, 2016. This year’s theme is Inspiring Next Generation of Entrepreneurs and we’re looking for companies that are innovative in their fields or business practices, are achieving growth and success.
Eligibility Criteria for Top 5 Companies to Watch
- Be a privately held commercial enterprise (not a nonprofit, not publicly traded, not a subsidiary or division of another company) and has not received the award in the past
- Be past the startup stage and facing issues of growth, not survival
- Employ 6-99 full-time equivalent (FTE) W2 employees which includes the owner – to translate all part-time employees into FTE divide the total hours of those employees by 2,000
- Have between £800,000 and £40M in annual revenue OR working capital from investors or grants
- Be based in the UK
- Demonstrate the intent and capacity to grow based on:
- Employee or sales growth
- Exhibit a sustainable competitive advantage
- Other notable successes
Innovation Award
To be eligible for this award:
- the product or service innovation must have been developed by the applicant and owned by applicant or company applicant works for
- the associated company must have 500 or fewer employees
You will be asked to provide a brief description of the following:
- product/service; the marketplace the product or service meets
- evidence of satisfying the market need
- the advantage over similar or previous versions of this product
- how the product benefits British economy
- why the product/service is unique

Entrepreneur of the Year
For developing an outstanding, growing business; innovative product(s), increasing jobs, increasing sales, overcoming adversity, and community contributions. Criteria include:
- Staying power – a substantiated history as an established business
- Growth in number of employees
- Increase in sales and/or unit volume
- Financial summary of the current and last 3 years (Number of employees, Total Sales, Net Profit (before tax) Total Assets, Total Liabilities and Net Worth)
- Innovativeness of product or service
- Response to Adversity
- Contributions to aid community-oriented projects
Small Business Exporter of the Year
Significantly increased export sales and profits, encouraging other firms to export, increased jobs through exports, and innovative methods of creating markets. Criteria include:
- Increased sales, profits and/or growth of employment because of exporting
- Financial summary of the current and last 3 years (Number of employees, Total Sales, Net Profit (before tax) Total Assets, Total Liabilities and Net Worth)
- Creative overseas marketing strategies, with description of products & markets served
- Effective solutions to export-related problems
- Encouraged other small businesses to export
- Introduction of unique trading companies
- Volunteer assistance to other small businesses entering the export market
Young Entrepreneur of the Year:
Owner will be under 30, three-year evidence of success in sales and profits, increased jobs, innovative products, demonstrated potential. Criteria include:
- Financial summary of the current and last 3 years (Number of employees, Total Sales, Net Profit (before tax) Total Assets, Total Liabilities and Net Worth)
- Increased employment opportunities
- Development and utilization of innovative or creative business methods
- Demonstrated entrepreneurial potential for long-term success
